Nagaland

Harry and Tiala Neufeld

We sell original, Nagaland tribal art, costume, and jewelry, at least 70 years old. Our offerings include wood sculpture; weapons; textiles; jewelry of glass, shell, crystal and carnelian beads; and status pieces, of and ornamented with, assorted animal materials. We also carry handwoven Folk Art reproductions of traditional Naga textiles, as shawls/throws, and as pillow covers and table runners. Finally, we have a line of beaded fashion jewelry featuring necklaces and earrings of glass, horn, bone, shell, wood, resin, silver, other metals, and stone along with bangles 10-40 years old.

I'm from the Philadelphia area, and have traveled extensively since the early 1970’s. My wife is Ao tribe Naga, born and raised in Nagaland, educated in Darjeeling, and residing now in the US. Our products are mostly from Nagaland and India. My former partners and I originally started collecting, recycling, refurbishing and importing antique ivory dowry jewelry from South India, mostly Gujarat and Rajasthan states, in the early 1970’s. My wife and I then started collecting and selling fine authentic Naga materials to Europe and the US in 1979, and also participated in the Santa Fe Folk Art Festival from 2013-2015.

It always has been, and is still an adventure, searching for, finding and even producing relics in and of foreign cultures, and traveling and living overseas to do so. One enables the other, so that is why it has become a lifelong hobby/livelihood. The old, original, traditional art, costume and jewelry are irreplaceable at their source; they can only be found now in circulation, and even less so if considering only pieces of good quality and provenance. As the original and closest-to-the-source collectors of Naga materials, I believe our collection to be the most extensive and high quality outside of those in the Pitt Rivers and Cambridge University museums in England.
